Microsonic pico+ Ultrasonic Sensors

Compact M18 Ultrasonic Sensors with IO-Link or Analogue Outputs & Straight or 90° Housings

Microsonic pico+ ultrasonic sensors provide non-contact object detection and distance measurement in a compact M18 cylindrical format. Four operating-range classes from 150 mm to 1,000 mm support applications ranging from short-distance presence detection through position, level, and continuous distance measurement.

The pico+ family is available in straight and 90° angled-head versions. Switching models use a Push-Pull output and support IO-Link, while analogue models are available with either 4–20 mA or 0–10 V output. Teach-in and LinkControl provide additional configuration options, and the compact straight housing is only 41 mm long.

Why Choose Microsonic pico+ Ultrasonic Sensors

The pico+ family combines compact M18 installation, multiple sensing ranges, straight or 90° housing options, and switching or analogue output configurations in one versatile sensor platform.

Push-Pull switching models support IO-Link for digital process data and parameterization, while analogue versions provide continuous 4–20 mA or 0–10 V distance signals. The compact housing and angled-head versions make pico+ especially useful where installation space is limited.

Key Features & Advantages

  • Four operating-range classes: 150 mm, 250 mm, 350 mm, and 1,000 mm

Typical Applications

Microsonic pico+ sensors are well suited to:

  • Object presence and position detection
  • Distance measurement on conveyors and material-handling equipment
  • Package and container detection
  • Fill-level and material-height monitoring
  • Position monitoring on automated machinery
  • Packaging and processing equipment
  • Pick-and-place and handling systems
  • Installations where compact M18 mounting is required
  • Applications where a 90° sensing direction helps accommodate limited mounting space
  • Applications where optical sensing may be affected by target colour, transparency, gloss, or reflectivity

How to Choose a pico+ Sensor

Start by selecting the operating range that best matches the normal working distance of the application:

  • pico+15: 150 mm operating range
  • pico+25: 250 mm operating range
  • pico+35: 350 mm operating range
  • pico+100: 1,000 mm operating range

Next, choose the required housing orientation:

  • Straight housing for conventional axial sensing
  • 90° angled-head housing where the sensing direction needs to be perpendicular to the sensor body or mounting depth is limited

Then select the required output configuration:

  • 1 Push-Pull switching output with IO-Link
  • 1 analogue 4–20 mA output
  • 1 analogue 0–10 V output

Switching models can operate with a single switching point, reflective-barrier mode, or window mode. Analogue models provide a distance-proportional output for continuous measurement.

Straight vs. 90° Housing

pico+ sensors are available with an axial sensing direction or a 90° angled head.

The straight version measures along the longitudinal axis of the sensor and uses a compact M18 housing only 41 mm long. The 90° version directs the ultrasonic sensing field radially, perpendicular to the sensor body, which can simplify installation where available depth is restricted or the sensor must be mounted parallel to a machine surface.

Select the housing style based on the available mounting location and required sensing direction.

IO-Link on pico+ Switching Models

Current pico+ switching models with the /A designation support IO-Link 1.1 and Smart Sensor Profile. IO-Link provides digital process data and parameterization through a compatible IO-Link master.

Analogue pico+ models use conventional 4–20 mA or 0–10 V outputs rather than IO-Link, so interface selection should be confirmed for the specific model being considered.

Operating Range vs. Maximum Range

The operating range is the primary working-distance specification and should normally be used when selecting a pico+ sensor.

The maximum range represents extended detection capability beyond the operating range under suitable target and application conditions.

For dependable sensor selection, use the operating range as the primary design value rather than the maximum range.

Frequently Asked Questions About Microsonic pico+ Ultrasonic Sensors

The pico+ family is available in four operating-range classes: 150 mm, 250 mm, 350 mm, and 1,000 mm. The appropriate range depends on the normal working distance, target characteristics, and installation conditions.

No. IO-Link is available on the Push-Pull switching versions. Current /A switching models support IO-Link 1.1 and Smart Sensor Profile. Analogue models use conventional 4–20 mA or 0–10 V outputs.

Depending on the model, pico+ sensors are available with one Push-Pull switching output with IO-Link, one 4–20 mA analogue output, or one 0–10 V analogue output.

Straight versions measure along the axis of the cylindrical sensor body. The 90° angled-head versions direct the sensing field perpendicular to the sensor body, which can be useful where mounting depth is limited or a side-facing sensing direction is required.

pico+ sensors can be configured using Teach-in on pin 5. LinkControl can also be used for PC-based parameterization, and IO-Link switching models can be parameterized through a compatible IO-Link system.

Yes. pico+ sensors support synchronization and multiplex operation for installations where several sensors operate in close proximity. Up to 10 sensors can be synchronized directly; larger installations can use the optional SyncBox1.
