Microsonic nero Ultrasonic Sensors
Compact M18 Ultrasonic Sensors with Switching or Analogue Outputs & Straight or 90° Housings
Microsonic nero ultrasonic sensors provide non-contact object detection and distance measurement in a compact M18 cylindrical housing. Four operating-range classes from 150 mm to 1,000 mm support applications ranging from short-distance presence detection through longer-distance position and level measurement
The nero family is available with PNP or NPN switching outputs, as well as 4–20 mA or 0–10 V analogue outputs. Straight and 90° WK housing versions provide flexible mounting options, while Teach-in allows switching points or analogue window limits to be configured directly at the sensor.

Why Choose Microsonic nero Ultrasonic Sensors?
The nero family combines compact M18 installation, straightforward Teach-in setup, multiple output choices, and four sensing ranges in a broad industrial sensor platform.
Straight and 90° versions allow the sensing direction to be matched to the available mounting space. Switching-output models are suited to presence, position, and window detection, while analogue-output versions provide a distance-proportional signal for continuous measurement applications.

Typical Applications
Microsonic nero sensors are well suited to:
- Object presence and position detection
- Distance measurement on conveyors and material-handling equipment
- Package and container detection
- Fill-level and material-height monitoring
- Position monitoring on automated machinery
- Packaging and processing equipment
- Pick-and-place and handling systems
- Installations where a 90° sensor head helps accommodate limited mounting space
- Applications where optical sensing may be affected by target colour, transparency, gloss, or reflectivity
How to Choose a nero Sensor
Start by selecting the operating range that best matches the normal working distance of the application:
- nero-15: 150 mm operating range
- nero-25: 250 mm operating range
- nero-35: 350 mm operating range
- nero-100: 1,000 mm operating range
Next, choose the required housing orientation:
- Straight housing for conventional axial sensing
- 90° WK housing where the sensing direction needs to be perpendicular to the sensor body or mounting depth is limited
Then select the required output type:
- PNP switching output
- NPN switching output
- 4–20 mA analogue output
- 0–10 V analogue output
Switching-output models are appropriate for object detection, switching-point, reflective-barrier, and window-mode applications. Analogue models provide a distance-proportional output for continuous measurement.
Straight vs. 90° WK Housing
nero sensors are available in straight and 90° WK versions.
The straight version measures along the longitudinal axis of the sensor. The 90° WK version directs the ultrasonic sensing field perpendicular to the sensor body, which can simplify installation where available depth is limited or the sensor needs to be mounted parallel to a machine surface.
Select the housing style based on the available mounting location and required sensing direction.
Operating Range vs. Maximum Range
The operating range is the primary working-distance specification and should normally be used when selecting a nero sensor.
The maximum range represents extended detection capability beyond the operating range under suitable target and application conditions.
The four nero range classes have the following operating and maximum ranges:
- nero-15: 150 mm operating range / 250 mm maximum range
- nero-25: 250 mm operating range / 350 mm maximum range
- nero-35: 350 mm operating range / 600 mm maximum range
- nero-100: 1,000 mm operating range / 1,300 mm maximum range
For dependable sensor selection, use the operating range as the primary design value rather than the maximum range.

Frequently Asked Questions About Microsonic nero Ultrasonic Sensors
What operating ranges are available in the Microsonic nero family?
The nero family is available in four operating-range classes: 150 mm, 250 mm, 350 mm, and 1,000 mm. The appropriate range depends on the normal working distance, target characteristics, and installation conditions.
What output options are available for nero sensors?
Depending on the model, nero sensors are available with a PNP switching output, NPN switching output, 4–20 mA analogue output, or 0–10 V analogue output.
What is the difference between straight and 90° WK nero sensors?
Straight versions measure along the axis of the cylindrical sensor body. The 90° WK versions direct the sensing field perpendicular to the sensor body, making them useful where mounting depth is restricted or a side-facing sensing direction is required.
How are Microsonic nero sensors configured?
nero sensors use Teach-in configuration. Switching points or analogue window limits can be set through the sensor’s Teach-in input, depending on the model.
Do Microsonic nero sensors support IO-Link?
No. The nero family uses Teach-in configuration rather than IO-Link. If IO-Link is required, another Microsonic cylindrical family such as lpc+ or pico+ may be more appropriate.
Why use an ultrasonic sensor instead of an optical sensor?
Ultrasonic sensing uses sound rather than reflected light, so detection is generally less dependent on target colour, transparency, gloss, or reflectivity. This can make nero sensors useful where optical sensing conditions are difficult or inconsistent.
