Why Choose Microsonic nano Ultrasonic Sensors?
The nano family combines ultrasonic sensing with a compact M12 cylindrical sensor format. Its M12 threaded housing is particularly useful where conventional M18 or M30 ultrasonic sensors would require too much installation space.
Switching and analogue versions allow the same compact family to cover presence detection, positioning, level monitoring, and continuous distance measurement. IO-Link-enabled switching models also provide digital process data and parameterization through a compatible IO-Link system.

- Object presence and position detection
- Short-range distance measurement
- Small-container level monitoring
- Package and component detection
- Position monitoring on automated machinery

- Applications where optical sensing may be affected by target colour, transparency, gloss, or reflectivity
How to Choose a nano Sensor
Start by selecting the operating range that best matches the normal working distance of the application:
- nano-15: 150 mm operating range
- nano-24: 240 mm operating range
Next, select the required output configuration:
- Switching output with IO-Link on applicable models
- 4–20 mA analogue output
- 0–10 V analogue output
Switching versions are suited to object detection, position sensing, and switching-point applications. Analogue versions provide a distance-proportional signal for continuous measurement.
Because nano uses a compact M12 threaded housing, it is particularly useful where installation space is limited or a smaller cylindrical sensor format is preferred.
Consider the required operating distance, output type, available mounting space, control-system interface, and application conditions when selecting a specific nano model.
Why the M12 Housing Matters
The defining advantage of nano is its compact M12 cylindrical format.
At only 55 mm long including the plug on switching versions, nano can fit into machine locations where larger cylindrical ultrasonic sensors may be difficult to install.
This makes nano particularly useful for:
- compact machinery
- small fixtures
- tight conveyor installations
- small-part handling systems
- retrofits where mounting space is limited
The smaller housing provides installation flexibility without giving up the fundamental advantages of ultrasonic sensing.
IO-Link on nano Switching Models
Selected nano switching models support IO-Link for digital process data, parameterization, and diagnostics through a compatible IO-Link master.
Analogue nano models use conventional 4–20 mA or 0–10 V outputs rather than IO-Link, so the interface should be confirmed for the specific model being selected.
As with the other Microsonic families, do not assume every nano model supports the same configurable IO-Link parameters.
Operating Range vs. Maximum Range
The operating range is the primary working-distance specification and should normally be used when selecting a nano sensor.
The maximum range represents extended detection capability beyond the operating range under suitable target and application conditions.
For dependable sensor selection, use the operating range as the primary design value rather than the maximum range.

Frequently Asked Questions About Microsonic nano Ultrasonic
What operating ranges are available in the Microsonic nano family?
The nano family is available in two operating-range classes: 150 mm and 240 mm. The appropriate range depends on the normal working distance, target characteristics, and installation conditions.
Why is the nano family especially useful in compact machinery?
nano uses an M12 threaded housing, and switching versions are only 55 mm long including the plug. This allows installation in locations where larger M18 or M30 ultrasonic sensors may not fit.
Do all Microsonic nano sensors support IO-Link?
No. IO-Link is available on selected switching models. Analogue nano models use conventional 4–20 mA or 0–10 V outputs.
What output options are available for nano sensors?
Depending on the model, nano sensors are available with switching outputs, 4–20 mA analogue output, or 0–10 V analogue output. Selected switching models also support IO-Link.
How are Microsonic nano sensors configured?
nano models use Teach-in configuration, and IO-Link-enabled switching versions can also be parameterized through a compatible IO-Link system.
When should I choose nano instead of a larger cylindrical ultrasonic sensor?
nano is especially useful when mounting space is restricted or an M12 threaded housing is preferred. Larger families may provide additional range, housing, or interface options, but nano is well suited to compact short-range sensing applications.
