Why Choose Microsonic lcs Ultrasonic Sensors
The lcs family is designed for applications that benefit from a compact cuboidal sensor with a side-facing transducer orientation. This housing arrangement can simplify installation where a conventional forward-facing ultrasonic sensor would be difficult to mount or would require additional clearance.
Three operating-range classes and three output configurations allow the sensor to be matched to the application. Switching models provide two or three independent PNP outputs, while analog versions automatically provide either 4–20 mA or 0–10 V according to the connected load. Multiple lcs sensors can also be synchronized when operating in close proximity.
Key Features & Advantages
- Side-facing transducer: Directs the ultrasonic wave from the side of the housing, supporting installations where sensor location, available mounting space, or target position makes forward-facing sensing less practical.
- Compact block-style housing: Plastic cuboidal housing with four mounting bores supports straightforward machine installation.
- Three operating ranges: Choose 250 mm, 350 mm, or 1,300 mm according to the required working distance.
- Maximum sensing distances: Available configurations extend to 350 mm, 600 mm, or 2,000 mm maximum sensing distance.
- Two PNP switching outputs:
/DD/QPversions provide two independent PNP switching outputs. - Three PNP switching outputs:
/DDD/QPversions provide three independent PNP switching outputs for applications requiring multiple set points. - Analog output:
/IU/QPversions provide 4–20 mA and 0–10 V analog output with automatic selection based on the connected load. - Teach-in configuration: Sensor settings are configured through pin 5 of the M12 connector.
- Multiple switching modes: Switching versions support single switching point, two-way reflective barrier, and window modes.
- Synchronization: Multiple lcs sensors can be synchronized to help reduce mutual interference when installed close together.
- 0.18 mm resolution: Provides fine measurement resolution across the family.
- Temperature compensation: Helps maintain measurement performance as ambient temperature changes.
- LinkControl support: Sensor parameters can also be configured from a PC using Microsonic LinkControl.
- 9–30 VDC operation: Supports common industrial control-voltage environments.

How to Choose a Microsonic lcs Sensor
- Operating range: Choose lcs-25 for applications requiring up to 250 mm operating range, lcs-35 for applications requiring up to 350 mm, or lcs-130 for applications requiring up to 1,300 mm.
- Maximum sensing distance: The three range classes provide maximum sensing distances of approximately 350 mm, 600 mm, and 2,000 mm. Use operating range as the primary selection specification.
- Two switching outputs: Choose the /DD/QP version when two independent PNP switching outputs are required.
- Three switching outputs: Choose the /DDD/QP version when three independent PNP switching outputs are required.
- Analog output: Choose the /IU/QP version when continuous distance or level measurement with 4–20 mA or 0–10 V output is required.
- Side-facing sensing: Consider the lcs family where machine geometry or available installation space makes a side-facing sensing direction advantageous.
- Multiple nearby sensors: Use synchronization where several ultrasonic sensors must operate close together and mutual interference is a concern.
- Configuration: Use Teach-in through pin 5 for direct setup, or LinkControl for PC-based parameterization.
- Target and environment: Confirm target size, surface, orientation, ambient conditions, mounting space, and required sensing distance before selecting the model.
Operating Range vs. Maximum Range
For Microsonic lcs sensors, the operating range should be treated as the primary working-distance specification when selecting a model. It represents the range intended for normal application planning and sensor selection.
The maximum range represents the farther detection capability available under suitable target and application conditions and should not be treated as the normal recommended working distance.
The lcs family provides three range classes:
- lcs-25: 250 mm operating range / 350 mm maximum sensing distance
- lcs-35: 350 mm operating range / 600 mm maximum sensing distance
- lcs-130: 1,300 mm operating range / 2,000 mm maximum sensing distance
Choose the model whose operating range comfortably covers the required sensing distance rather than selecting solely by its maximum detection capability.

Frequently Asked Questions About Microsonic lcs Ultrasonic Sensors
What are Microsonic lcs ultrasonic sensors used for?
Microsonic lcs sensors are used for non-contact distance measurement, object detection, positioning, and level monitoring on industrial machinery and automated equipment. Their side-facing transducer orientation is particularly useful where sensor location or available mounting space makes forward-facing sensing less practical.
What operating ranges are available for lcs sensors?
The lcs family is available with operating ranges of 250 mm, 350 mm, and 1,300 mm. The corresponding maximum sensing distances are approximately 350 mm, 600 mm, and 2,000 mm.
What output options are available?
lcs sensors are available with two PNP switching outputs, three PNP switching outputs, or an analog 4–20 mA / 0–10 V output. This allows the family to support both discrete switching applications and continuous distance or level measurement.
What is the advantage of the side-facing transducer orientation?
The lcs sensor directs the ultrasonic wave outward from the side of the housing rather than straight out from the end. This side-facing sensing direction can simplify installation where sensor location, available mounting depth, or target position makes a forward-facing sensor less practical.
Can multiple lcs sensors operate close together?
Yes. lcs sensors support synchronization so multiple sensors can operate near one another while helping reduce mutual ultrasonic interference.
What is the difference between /DD/QP, /DDD/QP, and /IU/QP versions?
/DD/QP models provide two PNP switching outputs, /DDD/QP models provide three PNP switching outputs, and /IU/QP models provide an analog output that automatically operates as either 4–20 mA or 0–10 V depending on the connected load.
