Microsonic dbk+4 Double Sheet Sensors

Ultrasonic Double-Sheet Detection for Paper, Film, Sheet Materials & Automated Feeding Systems

Microsonic dbk+4 ultrasonic double-sheet sensors detect missing sheets, single sheets, and double sheets in sheet-fed and material-handling processes. A transmitter sends ultrasonic energy through the material to a receiver on the opposite side. Because two sheets transmit substantially less ultrasonic energy than one, the system can distinguish between missing, single, and multiple layers.

The dbk+4 family covers a broad range of materials and installation requirements, with standard, thin, and thick working-range settings, selectable transmitter-to-receiver spacing, multiple transmitter and receiver designs, IO-Link on applicable models, Teach-in, and LinkControl parameterisation. Housing options include standard M18 components, a 90° receiver, external M18 receivers, compact M12 sensing heads, and separate transmitter or receiver components for replacement or special installation requirements.

Why Choose Microsonic dbk+4 Double Sheet Control?

The dbk+4 platform combines double-sheet detection with a wide choice of mechanical configurations. This makes it useful where the sensing principle is the same but machine geometry, material type, transmitter/receiver position, or available installation space varies from application to application.

The system normally operates without material Teach-in. Three selectable working ranges allow the sensor to be adapted to thin, standard, or thicker materials, while Teach-in is available for difficult applications such as wafers adhering through a water film.

The transmitter-to-receiver distance can also be adapted to the installation. The standard recommendation is approximately 40 mm, while most dbk+4 arrangements support spacing from 20 to 60 mm.

dbk+4 Working Ranges

The dbk+4 family provides three selectable working ranges so one sensor platform can cover substantially different sheet materials.

Standard

The standard range covers many common paper, film, sheet-fed, and web materials and is intended for the majority of double-sheet applications.

Thin

The Thin setting is intended for particularly lightweight materials, including very thin papers below the normal standard-range material weight.

Thick

The Thick setting extends operation to heavier materials such as paperboard and fine corrugated card.

The working range can be changed during operation through the control inputs without repeatedly teaching the material.

How the dbk+4 Configurations Differ

The large number of dbk+4 part numbers is primarily the result of different transmitter, receiver, housing, cable, connector, and mounting arrangements rather than different sensing principles.

Standard M18 Configuration

Standard cylindrical M18 transmitter and receiver arrangements provide a conventional installation for general double-sheet detection. Separate transmitter and receiver components are also available where an individual component needs to be replaced or incorporated into a custom installation.

90° Angled Receiver

The angled-head receiver directs the ultrasonic sensing path at 90° to the sensor body. This can simplify installations where axial mounting depth is limited or where machine geometry makes a straight receiver difficult to position.

External M18 Receiver

External receiver configurations allow the receiving transducer to be positioned separately from the main electronics where additional mounting flexibility is required.

M12 Sensing Heads

Compact M12 transmitter and receiver versions are available for installations where larger M18 components cannot be accommodated. These are particularly useful where sensing access is restricted or machine space is limited.

Cuboidal / Special Transmitter Configurations

Selected dbk+4 transmitters use compact cuboidal housings or extended cable arrangements for machine layouts where conventional cylindrical installation is not practical.

Separate Transmitters and Receivers

Microsonic also supplies individual transmitter and receiver components. These can be used as replacement parts or where the application requires a particular transmitter/receiver combination rather than a preconfigured complete set.

  • Applications requiring missing-sheet monitoring
  • Applications requiring reliable double-feed prevention

Material and Mounting Considerations

For paper and thin film, the transmitter and receiver can generally be positioned perpendicular to the material.

Some thicker or acoustically more demanding materials benefit from an angled sensing arrangement. Microsonic specifies application-dependent mounting angles for materials such as fine corrugated card, thin sheet metal, thicker plastic films, and wafers.

This is an important selection point: the correct dbk+4 model is determined not only by material thickness, but also by available mounting geometry and the orientation required for reliable ultrasonic transmission.

How to Choose a Microsonic dbk+4 Sensor

Start with the material being monitored and the available installation space.

First determine whether the application uses:

  • very thin material
  • standard paper, film, or sheet material
  • heavier paperboard or fine corrugated material

Then select the mechanical arrangement.

Choose a standard M18 configuration where conventional opposing transmitter and receiver mounting is practical.

Choose a 90° receiver where the sensing path needs to be redirected because of restricted axial mounting space.

Choose an external M18 receiver where the receiver needs to be positioned independently of the main sensor body.

Choose M12 sensing heads where installation space is especially restricted.

Choose separate transmitter or receiver components when replacing an existing component or creating a specific transmitter/receiver arrangement.

Then compare:

  • material type and thickness
  • Thin / Standard / Thick working range
  • transmitter/receiver spacing
  • required mounting angle
  • available installation space
  • M12 vs. M18 sensing heads
  • standard vs. 90° receiver
  • complete sensor set vs. individual component
  • PNP vs. NPN switching requirements
  • IO-Link requirement
  • Teach-in requirement
  • trigger-mode requirements
  • connection and cable arrangement

IO-Link, Teach-in & LinkControl

Current dbk+4 IO-Link versions support IO-Link 1.1.4 and Smart Sensor Profile, providing access to digital process data and parameterisation through a compatible IO-Link master.

For installations that do not use IO-Link, dbk+4 can also be configured through control inputs and Microsonic LinkControl. Parameters that can be adjusted include transmitter/receiver spacing, switching behaviour, trigger mode, switching delays, and working-range thresholds.

Complete Sensors vs. Replacement Components

Not every dbk+4 product listed on this page is a complete double-sheet sensor system. The range includes both complete transmitter/receiver configurations and individual transmitter or receiver components for replacement or specific machine layouts.

Before ordering, confirm whether the application requires a complete dbk+4 system, a replacement component, or a specific sensing-head, cable, or connection arrangement.

Frequently Asked Questions About Microsonic dbk+4 Double Sheet Sensors

The dbk+4 system distinguishes between missing material, a single sheet, and two or more sheets travelling together by evaluating the ultrasonic signal transmitted through the material.

Depending on the configuration and working range, dbk+4 can be used with paper, film, metal-laminated sheets, self-adhesive films, fine corrugated card, thin sheet metal, wafers, PCBs, and similar sheet materials.

The three ranges adapt the sensor to different material weights and acoustic characteristics. Thin is intended for particularly lightweight materials, Standard covers the majority of sheet applications, and Thick extends operation to heavier material such as paperboard and fine corrugated card.

The dbk+4 family uses the same basic ultrasonic double-sheet sensing principle across many different housing, transmitter, receiver, connector, cable, and mounting configurations. The product range therefore includes complete systems as well as individual transmitter and receiver components.

Choose the compact M12 versions when available mounting space is restricted. M18 configurations provide the more conventional cylindrical sensing-head arrangement.

No. IO-Link applies to compatible complete dbk+4 controller configurations. Individual transmitters and receivers do not function as standalone IO-Link sensors. Always confirm the interface of the specific dbk+4 part number being selected.
